Licensed Veterinary Technicians
Stephanie Acosta, LVT Hospital Supervisor
Stephanie graduated from Mercy College in 2016 with a B.S. in Veterinary Technology. During her time there, she developed a special interest in anesthesia, and became a teaching assistant for the both the Pharmacology and Surgical Nursing courses. Once graduated, she began to teach as an adjunct for the Veterinary Technology department. Stephanie began working with DVMH in the summer of 2016, and quickly became interested in the training and education of the staff. Currently, she is pursuing a master’s degree in education, and hopes to spread knowledge of veterinary medicine to professionals in the field, and to the general public. During her free time, Stephanie watches baseball, reads and obsesses over cats, more specifically her three babies Lady, Presley and Murphy. Once a year, she goes to Belize with the professors at Mercy College and they volunteer at a veterinary wildlife clinic.
Jennifer Smedley, LVT
Jen has a BS in Accounting from Villanova University and worked in accounting/finance for over 17 years. She was previously employed by Moore Capital Management, a hedge fund, for 12 years until she decided to leave her career in finance behind to back to school to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Everything changed for her when she adopted a dachshund named Longfellow. Watching him blossom from the scared dog he was to the happy dog he is today made her realize she wanted to work with animals everyday. In 2016, she graduated from LaGuardia Community College and became a LVT. She first joined the Downtown Veterinary Group as an intern with our West Village location in 2016, and transferred to Tribeca in August 2017. In her spare time, when she isn’t spoiling her dog, she volunteers at the ASPCA.
Andrea Straker, LVT
Andrea is a Bronx native whose passions include African American social issues and injustices, women's rights, photography, and advocating for the safety and well-being of animals. After completing her internship for veterinary technology at City Veterinary Care, she hasn't looked back and has fallen in love with the radiology sector of animal medicine. Her favorite thing to do with patients is create voices for them and let them engage in some much needed dialogue. She has one ball of fur named Muffin and has mastered the art of cat wrangling.
Emily has been working in the veterinary field since 2013 and has been an assistant with DVMH since the Fall of 2016. Her animal care experience ranges from farm animals and exotics to shelter and companion animals. Emily received a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and is currently pursuing her Masters of Science degree in Biology from CUNY’s City College graduate program and plans to attend veterinary school. Outside of school and work, Emily enjoys playing piano, cooking vegan, and spending time with her family, including her tortoise Shelley and Pit Bull rescue Prin.
Andy has been a vital member of our team since 2012. He was previously from North Carolina where he spent 12 years working at veterinary hospitals perfecting his patient care techniques. He aspires to get his masters in music composition and regularly plays guitar with a variety of local bands. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring NYC with his fiancé, bike riding, and of course lounging around with his pet’s Simone and Bill.
